Set up Dosewell in 15 minutes

This page gets one product looking the way Dosewell is designed to look, then shows you everything else you can add later. The theme editor links here from its setup notices.

Before you start, duplicate the theme and work on the copy.

The four fields Dosewell reads

Dosewell reads product data from metafields in the namespace calyx. Four of them carry the theme’s signature; everything else is optional.

MetafieldCreated onType in the adminWhat it does
calyx.colorProductsColorPaints the area behind the product photo on cards, the product page and the cart; colors the dot on the menu chip and the pin on the day timeline
calyx.timingProductsSingle line text, one value (choices: Morning, With food, Evening, Anytime)The time of day on cards and the product page; groups the cart; places the product in the routine builder
calyx.servingsVariantsIntegerServings in that variant. Gives the price per serving and the cart’s cost per day
calyx.labelProductsMulti-line textThe formula panel: one ingredient per line

If your store already keeps this data in another namespace (for example custom), keep it there and change Theme settings > Product > Metafield namespace to that namespace. The keys must stay the same (color, timing, servings, label and so on).

Step 1: Create the definitions (4 minutes)

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Custom data.

  2. Choose Products, then Add definition.

  3. Create these three definitions. For each one, type the name, then edit Namespace and key so it reads exactly as shown:

    NameNamespace and keyTypeOptions
    Formula colorcalyx.colorColorOne value
Time of daycalyx.timingSingle line textOne value. Turn on Limit to preset choices and add Morning, With food, Evening and Anytime
    Formula labelcalyx.labelMulti-line text
  4. Go back to Settings > Custom data, choose Variants, then Add definition:

    NameNamespace and keyTypeOptions
    Servingscalyx.servingsIntegerOne value. Minimum 1
  5. Optional, for colored menu dots and collection tiles: choose Collections, then Add definition: name “Goal color”, namespace and key calyx.color, type Color.

Time of day values are read without regard to capital letters, but the words must match: write “Anytime” (not “Any time”) and “With food”. Anything else is listed under Anytime in the cart.

Step 2: Fill in one product (4 minutes)

Open a product in Products. The four fields appear in the Metafields card at the bottom of the page; the servings field appears on each variant’s page.

  • Formula color: pick a color from the organizer palette below.

  • Time of day: pick one of the four choices.

  • Servings (each variant): the number of servings in that variant, for example 30 for a 60-capsule bottle taken two at a time.

  • Formula label: one ingredient per line, in this form:

    Serving: 2 capsules
    Magnesium | 200 mg | 48% | as magnesium bisglycinate
    L-theanine | 100 mg | |
Tart cherry extract | 480 mg | | Prunus cerasus, fruit
    Other: hypromellose (capsule), rice flour.

Each ingredient line is Name | amount | %DV | form, separated by the | character:

    • Name is printed in bold.
    • Amount is printed as written, with its unit (“200 mg”, “2,000 IU”, “10%”).
    • %DV is the percent Daily Value. Leave it empty to print the dagger (†) that points to the footnote “Daily Value not established.” (you can change that sentence in Theme settings > Claims).
    • Form is optional and printed in parentheses after the name.
    • A line that starts with Serving: becomes the serving size line.
    • A line that starts with Other: becomes the other ingredients line under the table.

Save the product, open it in the theme editor, and check the Setup checklist block at the top of the buy box: it shows a check for each of the four fields this product has. The block is visible only in the theme editor; delete it whenever you like.

Tip: to fill many products at once, select them in Products, choose Bulk edit, and add the metafield columns.

Step 3: Set up the home page (3 minutes)

In the theme editor, on the home page:

  1. Formula hero: pick your best-known product under Product. The hero takes its photo, color and label from it. Write a heading under 40 characters so it stays on two lines on phones.
  2. Formula index: pick the collection that holds your formulas under Collection.
  3. Featured product: pick a product with options, such as one with several flavors.
  4. The other sections (Specimen sheets, Day timeline, Formula comparison, Evidence, FAQ, Newsletter) ship with sample text. Replace it with yours, or remove a section with its Remove section button.

Step 4: Menu, claims and basics (3 minutes)

  • Menu. The header shows your main menu’s top-level links as chips under the bar. Links to collections that have a calyx.color get a color dot. Links with sub-links open a menu with up to three levels. About nine short top-level links fit on one row on a laptop screen; more scroll sideways. Edit the menu in Online Store > Navigation.
  • Claims. In Theme settings > Claims, paste your product disclaimer (US supplement sellers usually use the FDA statement) and choose where it shows. Add a Testing note if you test each lot.
  • Logo and colors. Theme settings > Logo for the logo and favicon; Theme settings > Colors for the color schemes.

Step 5: Check (1 minute)

Preview a product page, a collection and the cart. In the theme editor, a block that reads a metafield the product does not have shows a dashed notice naming that metafield and its type. Shoppers never see these notices.

The organizer palette

Formula colors look best when they share one lightness, so the colored areas read as one set. These eight colors are tuned for that; the darker one is for a single hero product.

ColorHex
Rose#EAABA5
Sand#DDB689
Olive#C0C38A
Sage#9CCCA4
Aqua#82CDCD
Sky#91C5EA
Lavender#BCB6EB
Orchid#DFABCD
Moss (hero product)#66845F

Photos shot on white or near-white work best. Theme settings > Product cards > Blend white image backgrounds into the color field makes a white photo background take the product color; it applies only to products with a light calyx.color.

Optional fields

Add these when you want more on the page. Create them the same way as in step 1 (products unless the table says otherwise). All keys are in the calyx namespace (or the namespace you set in Theme settings > Product > Metafield namespace).

Ratings come from the standard reviews.rating and reviews.rating_count metafields, which reviews apps fill.

Metaobjects for calyx.actives, calyx.evidence and calyx.faqs

Create each definition in Settings > Custom data > Metaobjects > Add definition. The type names below are suggestions; Dosewell reads the field keys, so they must match exactly.

calyx_active (one label row):

Field keyTypeNotes
nameSingle line textRequired
formSingle line textPrinted as “(as …)”
binomialSingle line textLatin name, set in italics
partSingle line textPlant part, like fruit
amountSingle line textLike 200
unitSingle line textLike mg
amount_noteSingle line textA second line, like 2,000 IU
daily_valueSingle line textLike 48%; empty prints the dagger
whyMulti-line textOpens from a + button on the full label
source_studyMetaobject reference to calyx_studyLinked under the why note

calyx_study: title (single line text, the finding in plain words), authors, journal, year (integer or text), design (like “Randomized, double-blind”), participants (like “46 people”), duration (like “8 weeks”), url (URL, the abstract), finding (multi-line text).

calyx_faq: question (single line text), answer (rich text).

Then add the product metafields calyx.actives, calyx.evidence and calyx.faqs with the type Metaobject, List of entries, pointing at the matching definition.

Subscriptions

If you sell subscriptions through a subscription app, write your terms (how customers skip, pause or cancel) in Theme settings > Product > Subscription terms. Dosewell preselects the subscription option only when these terms are written, and shows them under the subscription option and in the cart. See Product page and Cart.
