Do I have to fill in the Dosewell metafields?
No. Dosewell reads product data from metafields, but every page works without them. A product with no formula data gets a regular product page: title, price, options, description and buy buttons. Blocks that need data the product does not have render nothing for shoppers. In the theme editor they show a dashed notice that names the metafield to add and its type.
Start with the four fields in Set up Dosewell in 15 minutes
(calyx.color, calyx.timing, the variant’s calyx.servings and calyx.label). Everything else
is optional.
My store already keeps formula data in the custom namespace. Can Dosewell read it?
Yes, if the keys and types match. Set Theme settings > Product > Metafield namespace to
custom. Dosewell then reads every key from that namespace instead of calyx: custom.color,
custom.timing, custom.label, the collection color, the blog post products and the rest. The
keys and types must be the ones listed in Set up Dosewell in 15 minutes, and
Dosewell reads all of them from the one namespace you enter.
Why does the home page hero show “Active one”, “Active two” and “Active three”?
Those rows are the hero’s three Formula row blocks, which ship with sample text. With Label rows set to From the product, else formula row blocks, the hero shows the label of the product picked under Product, and the formula row blocks only when that product has no label. To fix it, do one of these:
- pick a product that has a
calyx.labelorcalyx.activesmetafield; - edit the Formula row blocks with your own ingredients, and set Label rows to Formula row blocks only if you want them to win over the product’s label;
- set Label rows to No label.
Why is a product listed under Anytime in the cart?
The cart groups lines by each product’s calyx.timing. Dosewell knows four values: Morning, With food,
Evening and Anytime. Capital letters do not matter, but the words do. A product without the
metafield, or with any other value, is listed under Anytime.
To stop typos, edit the metafield definition in Settings > Custom data > Products, turn on Limit to preset choices and add the four values. When no line in the cart has a time of day, the cart leaves the headings out. To list lines without groups, turn off Theme settings > Cart > Group items by time of day.
Why don’t I see the price per serving or the cost per day?
Both need calyx.servings, an Integer metafield on variants (a product-level calyx.servings
fills in for variants without one). Check that:
- the variant has servings: open the product, then the variant, and look in its Metafields card;
- the price per serving is turned on where you expect it: Theme settings > Product cards > Show price per serving for cards, Show price per serving in the Price block for the product page, and Show price per serving in the Formula index section for the tray;
- for the cart, Theme settings > Cart > Show cost per day is on.
The cost per day divides each line’s price by its servings and multiplies it by the product’s
calyx.daily_servings (empty means 1). See Cart.
How do I add a “why this amount” note to a label row?
Notes come from two places:
- the
whyfield of acalyx_activemetaobject, for products whose label iscalyx.actives(Metaobjects). Add asource_studyto link the study under the note; - the Why this amount field of a Formula row block, in the Formula panel section.
A label written in calyx.label (one line per ingredient) has no notes. The + button that opens a
note shows on the full label: the product page’s Formula panel block (with Show why each
amount was chosen on), the Formula panel section (with Show why each amount on) and the
Formula label block (with its Show why each amount on; it is off by default). The hero and
the compact labels never show notes.
How do I show the FDA statement on every product page?
Write the statement once in Theme settings > Claims > Product disclaimer, then choose Show disclaimer on:
- Footer or Product pages and footer (the default): the statement is the footnote of the label in the footer, so it shows on every page of the store, product pages included.
- Product pages or Product pages and footer: the statement also prints under the product
page’s Evidence block. That block shows only for products with studies in
calyx.evidence, and only while its Show disclaimer is on.
For products without studies, and if you want the statement next to the formula rather than in the footer: open the product template in the theme editor, add a Text block to the Story column under the Formula panel block, paste the statement, and set Size to Small and Color to Secondary text. A block added to a template shows on every product that uses the template. If you change the statement later, change it in both places.
The cart page can print the statement under its checkout button too: Cart section, Show product disclaimer.
How do I change words like “formulas”?
Words that shoppers see but that are not settings, such as “Shop all formulas”, “Search formulas”, “Your daily formulas cost $2.24 a day.”, the empty cart’s “Your cart is empty.” or the time-of-day names, are the theme’s default content. To change them:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
- Next to Dosewell, open the … menu and choose Edit default theme content.
- Search for the word, change it, and save.
Some headings are section or theme settings instead, and you change them in the theme editor: for example the cart page’s “Popular formulas” (the Heading of its Featured collection section), “Compare formulas” (the Heading of a Formula comparison section) and “Pairs with your cart” (Theme settings > Cart > Recommendations heading).
Can I sell products that are not supplements?
Yes. Accessories, merchandise and gift cards use the same templates. Formula blocks render nothing for products without formula data, the cart lists them under Anytime (or without groups), and quick add works as it does for any product. For a cleaner editor, give those products their own template without the formula blocks (Product page).
For a store that is not a supplement store, set Theme settings > Product > Formula panel title
to Key actives (skincare), Nutrition Facts or Ingredients (food and drink). A single product can override the title with its
calyx.panel_title metafield.

Why don’t shoppers see subscription options?
Dosewell has no subscriptions of its own. Purchase options show only for products that have a subscription plan from a subscription app. Install an app, add a plan to the product in the app, and the Purchase options block appears in the buy box and in quick view. The cart then offers Switch on one-time lines (with Theme settings > Cart > Offer subscription on one-time items on).
Subscription is preselected only when Theme settings > Product > Preselected purchase option is Subscription and Subscription terms is written as well. Without terms, one-time purchase is preselected. See Product page.
Why is the Pairs with block empty?
Pairs with shows the complementary products Shopify has for the product. Shopify only has them when you set them in the free Search and Discovery app (how). Until then, the block shows its Fallback products. Products that are sold out or already in the cart are left out, so the block hides when none remain. The cart’s “Pairs with your cart” works the same way, with Theme settings > Cart > Products to suggest as its fallback.
Can shoppers enter a discount code in the cart?
No. Shoppers enter discount codes at checkout; the cart has no code field. The cart shows every discount that already applies, by name: automatic discounts and codes, on a line or on the order. The Routine builder section has a Note you can use to describe an automatic discount you run, like “Three or more formulas save 10% at checkout”. The note only describes it: create the discount itself in Discounts.
Why doesn’t the “Only 3 left” line show?
The Inventory status block shows “Only N left” when the selected variant’s quantity is at or below Low stock threshold (5 by default), and only for variants whose inventory Shopify tracks. Dosewell never shows a number that does not come from your inventory. Above the threshold the block shows nothing, or “In stock” when Show In stock above the threshold is on. A variant that keeps selling when out of stock shows “Ships when back in stock” at zero.
Where do back-in-stock requests go?
When the selected variant is sold out, the Back in stock request block shows an email field.
A request reaches you as a contact form email that names the product and the variant and carries
the tag back-in-stock. Contact form emails go to the sender email in Settings >
Notifications. Reply to each request when the product is back. Turn on Promise an email in the
confirmation only if you reply to every request, because it tells the shopper you will.
How do I add product reviews?
Install a reviews app. Dosewell shows star ratings from the standard reviews.rating and
reviews.rating_count metafields, which most reviews apps fill: on cards (Theme settings >
Product cards > Show product rating), in the Rating block under the product title, and in a
Formula comparison section with Show rating on.
The app’s review list goes in as an app block. The product template has an empty Testimonials section for it under the comparison: it shows nothing until you add an app block or quotes. App blocks also fit in the buy box and the story column.

How do I turn off the color behind product photos?
Dosewell paints the area behind each photo with the product’s calyx.color. Your options, from least
to most change:
- Set Theme settings > Colors > Product color fields to Color scheme field. Every product then uses the scheme’s Default product color field, which you can set to the same color as the Background for no visible field.
- On the product page, turn off Theme settings > Product > Paint the product image area with the product color.
- On cards, turn off Theme settings > Product cards > Blend white image backgrounds into the color field if a white photo background takes on a color you do not want.
Photos with busy or mid-grey backgrounds look best with Color scheme field and Image fit set to Fill.
The label covers part of my product photo. Can I move it?
On the product page, the small key actives label sits on the edge of the main image on desktop. Set the Product information section’s Label on the image edge to Off. The Key actives block then shows a compact label of the first rows in the buy box instead (on desktop it hides itself while the label is on the image edge, so the label never shows twice).
In the Formula hero, choose Label position: Across the image edge, Inside the image or Under the image. A label with more than four rows always moves under the image; set Rows shown to 3 or 5 to keep it on the edge, with a link to the full label.
How do I stop the formula panel from animating?
The panel prints itself top to bottom once, the first time it scrolls into view. To turn that off everywhere, turn off Theme settings > Animations > Print formula panels as they scroll into view, or set Animations to Reduced or Off. To turn it off in one place, turn off Print the label as it scrolls into view in that Formula panel block or section.
It never runs on the first section of a page, and visitors who ask their device for reduced motion never see it. The text is in the page from the start, so search engines and screen readers read it either way.
Why does my menu scroll sideways?
The header shows your main menu’s top-level links as chips in one row. About nine short links fit on a laptop screen; more scroll sideways. Shorten the labels, or move links under a parent link (links with sub-links open a menu with up to three levels). Edit the menu in Online Store > Navigation. On phones the chips always scroll sideways, and the menu button opens the full menu.

Can I translate Dosewell and sell in other countries?
Yes. Dosewell ships its storefront text in English, and every word shoppers see comes from the theme’s default content, so a translation app such as Shopify’s free Translate & Adapt can translate it. Dosewell supports right-to-left languages: the page switches direction when the language is right-to-left.
To let shoppers pick their country (and currency) or language, turn on the selectors: Header > Country and language selectors, Announcement bar > Show country and language selectors, or Footer > Show country selector and Show language selector. They show only when your store sells in more than one country or language. Theme settings > Currency format > Show currency codes adds codes like USD to cart totals.
The theme editor’s setting names are in English only.
Does Dosewell need any apps?
No. Every feature in these docs works without an app, except the ones that depend on what an app provides:
- subscriptions need a subscription app;
- star ratings and review lists need a reviews app;
- choosing filters and setting complementary or related products yourself uses Shopify’s free Search and Discovery app (Collections, search and filters).
Apps add their blocks in the theme editor (Add block in a section) or as app embeds.
Is Dosewell accessible?
Dosewell is built to the WCAG 2.2 AA guidelines. Every menu, filter, swatch, carousel and dialog works with a keyboard; dialogs hold focus while open and return it when closed. The formula panel is a real table that screen readers read row by row. Cart, price and filter changes are announced. Motion follows the visitor’s reduced-motion setting, and the announcement bar’s rotation has a pause button. Every text color in the Dosewell style’s color schemes has at least 4.5:1 contrast with its background, and outlines and buttons at least 3:1.
What you add matters too: write alt text for your images, keep those contrast ratios if you change scheme colors (Presets), and keep words out of images.
How do I update Dosewell without losing my changes?
When a new version is out, Shopify shows an update notice for Dosewell in Online Store > Themes. Updating adds the new version to your theme library as a copy, with your theme editor settings and content carried over; edits to the theme code are not carried over. Preview the new copy, then publish it. If you edited code, note your edits first and make them again in the new copy.
What changed in each version is in the changelog.
